Having made a very good start to life in the Bundesliga, newly promoted Hannover will be looking keep their run going when visiting Borussia Park on Saturday afternoon. Manager André Breitenreiter, who made 72 appearances for Hannover as a player, has seen his side go unbeaten in the first six weeks of the campaign, winning three and drawing three along the way. Such results showcase the progress that Die Roten have made under Breitenreiter.

Saturday’s hosts had also made a fairly reasonable start to the new campaign, though, things turned very sour indeed last weekend as they were embarrassed 6-1 by league leaders Dortmund. Losing against a team who’ve looked imperious so far this season isn’t the end of the world, but the manner in which Dieter Hecking’s men capitulated after going behind was somewhat alarming. Improvement is needed now back on home soil, especially at the back.

Back in front of their own fans, against newly promoted opposition, this is a good opportunity for the hosts, although confidence in the Gladbach camp isn’t likely to be sky-high right now. What’s more, they face a visiting team whose tails are up having achieved some impressive results in recent weeks. So far this season, Hannover have generally employed a defensive style, while it’s highly likely that, after last week’s shambolic showing at Westfalenstadion, Gladbach’s primary concern, at least early on, will be to keep things nice and tight. The two bets that stand out are ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ and ‘Both Teams to Score – NO’.

Gladbach are known as quite an attacking side and they’re certainly no strangers to goals; however, there are two reasons as to why goals could remain largely elusive at Borussia Park on Saturday afternoon. Firstly, it’s reasonably to assume that, following that drubbing last week, that Dieter Hecking will have his team focussed on defending first and foremost, and, secondly, it is in these sort of games (against teams who sit deep and make life difficult) where Die Fohlen sometimes come up short. Recent matches against both Stuttgart and Frankfurt are prime examples. The hosts are often involved in high-scoring matches against attacking teams who’re willing to come forward. In all honesty, it’s hard to expect that from Hannover, who’ve been doing a good job of keeping teams out by adopting a cautious approach.

Against Frankfurt in particular, Hecking’s men found it very hard to break down a team who came with a defensive game plan; the visitors sat deep, soaked up pressure and limited Gladbach to shots from distance. Similar tactics have seen Hannover thrive so far this season. Breitenreiter really does seem to have got it right at Hannover; he knows that his side aren’t going to go and outplay many teams in this division, but they can certainly outwork and outfight them. By being organised and making themselves hard to beat, Hannover have kept four clean sheets so far and have conceded just two goals, letting in more than one on zero occasions. What’s more ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ has landed 100% of their matches, while both teams have scored just 33%. Die Roten won’t get forward much, but as long as they give nothing away, that probably won’t concern Breitenreiter too much.

The hosts do of course have quality going forward, but, as we’ve already seen so far this season, even the likes of Stindl, Hazard and Raffael have struggled against teams who sit deep. What’s more, they’ve not created an abundance of chances in their matches so far and are probably someway off their best in terms of attacking productivity. A match against a deep-lying side probably isn’t going help them in this respect either.  Even if they have got what it takes to come out on top here, it’s likely to be in low-scoring style and they’ll certainly have to work hard for it.

All things considered, with neither of these sides impressing going forward, and with Hannover creating an excellent defensive impression in their six games to date, a lack of goals seems somewhat likely. At very generous-looking prices, both ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ and ‘Both Teams to Score – NO’ make the cut ahead of this one.
