Lamont Roach Jr. vs Angel Rodriguez: Preview and Prediction
Roach vs Rodriguez Preview
Roach Jr., 26 years old, has a record of 22-1-1 with 9 knockouts and has boxed 140 rounds since making his pro debut in 2014. He measures 5-feet-7-inches tall and has a 68-inch reach, but he isn’t a power puncher or KO artist by any means, with a 37.5 percent knockout ratio. He has, however, defeated two of his last three opponents.
When he won the National Golden Gloves title in the 132-pound class in 2013, USA Boxing awarded him the most outstanding American fighter. He’s also a five-time Ringside World Champion, a National PAL Champion from 2011, and a two-time Junior National Golden Gloves Champion. His best wins since turning pro have come against Alvarado, Jonathan Oquendo, Alberto Mercado, Rey Perez, Luis Hinojosa, and Alejandro Valdez.
With his victory over Valdez, he also claimed the vacant WBC Youth Silver Super Featherweight title. Roach Jr.’s only fight was a ten-round battle with Orlando Cruz in April of 2018. In November of 2019, he was defeated by Jamel Herring via unanimous decision in a fight for the WBO Super Featherweight Title.

Rodriguez, 34 years old, was born in Venezuela and later relocated to Colombia. He has a 20-1 record with 10 knockouts but has primarily competed in South America against limited opposition. Rodriguez has boxed 111 rounds since turning pro in 2012, following a successful amateur career. He stands 5-feet-9-inches tall and has a 72-inch reach, giving him a two-inch height advantage and a four-inch reach advantage over Roach.
Rodriguez’s lone defeat came in November 2013, when Carlos Diaz defeated him in an eight-round unanimous decision. He’s won all 12 of his fights since then. Rodriguez’s current knockout ratio is 47.6 percent, indicating he is not a power puncher. His most notable victories have come against Mark Uranov, Julian Aristule, Angel Granados, and Sergio Nunez. Rodriguez has won the WBA Fedecentro Lightweight Title as a professional.
Roach vs Rodriguez Prediction
Roach had long been seen as a promising talent who could win a world title one day, but he came up short against Herring. Rodriguez is eight years older and has faced less competition, but he has the height advantage, reaches, and arguably power. On the other hand, Roach’s boxing talents and experience against more challenging opponents should see him win on Saturday night.
I believe Roach’s skills and the eight-year age advantage will be the difference.
