Former Real Madrid and Tottenham forward Rafael Van der Vaart has named the country he hopes his country, the Netherlands, meet in the World Cup round of 16.

Former Tottenham attacking midfielder Rafel Van der Vaart wants the Netherlands to meet England in the Qatar World Cup round of 16.

The Netherlands successfully finished as the winners of Group A following a tight 2-1 win over Qatar on Tuesday afternoon.

Louis van Gaal’s side hasn’t performed well in the competition so far, although they have two wins and one draw in three group stage games.

Van der Vaart has claimed that he hopes his country come up against the Three Lions, who will look to confirm their place in the next round against Wales later today.

England need a win or draw against Wales tonight to proceed to the round of 16 and Van der Vaart is already hoping for the Three Lions to go head to head with the Dutchmen.

Speaking after the Netherlands’ unconvincing win over Qatar, he said: “I hope we face England in the Round of 16.”

Louis van Gaal has regularly talked about his side’s chances of winning the 2022 Qatar World Cup in December but their performances haven’t matched the hype yet.

Coming up against a England side that thrashed Iran 6-2 and played a goalless draw against the USA wouldn’t be what Louis van Gaal and his men will be hoping for.

However, if the Three Lions beat Wales tonight and finish as the winners of Group B, they are unlikely to meet the winners of Group A.

Indirectly, Van der Vaart is campaigning for England to finish behind Iran or the USA in Group B.
